After high school sports careers these men picked up a hobby to keep their passion for athletics alive as adults.
The relationship between coaches and their players. It goes beyond the gymnasium, the field, or the diamond. In fact, that special connection can extend throughout an entire LIFE. Today, the time machine witnesses just such an occurrence as former East Canton basketball coach Joe Pangrazio and his former player Jimmy Young join us in the studio.
It’s 1987 and Jimmy Young is a high school kid like any other: he’s not a bad kid by any means but also not one that has a sense of direction either. Add in an aversion to authority and a the wrong kind of peer group and, like so many kids out there, you have a recipe for disaster. Enter Coach P. Sometimes, despite their best intentions, for some reason a kid just needs MORE than their parents – someone who believes in them and TELLS them so in no uncertain terms. Jimmy credits Coach Pangrazio as that person in his life. When coach sought Jimmy out and told him he wanted him on his team, it made all the difference to a kid who didn’t know it but needed to hear exactly THAT. Jimmy took Coach P. up on that offer and joined a team that included Chris Kline, Bryan Shephard, Chris Kopp, Jerry Harris, and Harold Fisher.
The 1962 football season was a special one for the Coach Don Nehlen’s Canton South Wildcats as they arguably had the best team in Stark county (and some even say one of the best teams of all TIME). Two players from that legendary team, Frank Dugan and Ted Neininger, are in-studio to relive that amazing season with special guests contributing along the way!
The time machine’s first stop is game 10 of that season vs. the the 8-1 Cambridge Bobcats. A grudge match for some on the team, the stage was set for an explosive confrontation; however, no Wildcat dared to dream the outcome to follow. Amid non-stop rain and mud galore at Central Catholic Stadium (Canton South’s stadium had been condemned and this served as their temporary home), Frank Dugan scored a truly awesome EIGHT touchdowns resulting in 50 points! Teammate John Hackenberg calls in to re-live this amazing accomplishment with the guys and the memories flow like it was YESTERDAY. The resulting 64-0 Canton South victory is surely etched in the memories of all who attended even 50 years after that fateful day.
A bizarre medical coincidence leads 4 prominent Stark county coaches to not only form deep life long friendships but also to turn their shared diagnosis into a weapon to fight a common opponent.
When Malone University’s head basketball coach Hal Smith, Lake High School Athletic Director Bruce Brown, Wooster High School Athletic Director Chuck Cooper and the late Walsh University mens basketball coach Steve Loy were all diagnosed with the rare liver disease primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), rather than accept defeat, the men forged an organization to help others stricken with this disease for which there is no known cause.
Since 1999, The Hoops 4 Healing Foundation have used their Hoops 4 Healing Annual Basketball Classic to not only raise money to further research toward finding a cure for PSC but also to spread the message of organ donation. Through this and the sharing of their stories, the founders continue to fight a disease that has so profoundly affected their lives.
Guests: Mike Miday and Rick Haverstock
Hosts: Larry Hackenberg and Tim Haverstock
Current director of The J. Babe Stearn Community Center, Tim Haverstock joins Larry in the studio as co-host to chronicle the dedication of The 50 Point Club of The J. Babe Stearn Center. What’s The 50 Point Club? It’s a celebration of those select few young men who, over the years, have had the rare distinction of scoring 50 points in a single basketball game.
Those esteemed ranks include Jed Taylor (Lehman), John Namciu (Timken), Mike Austin (Timken), Mike Miday (Timken), Rick Haverstock (Lincoln), Ryan Dopirak (Central Catholic), and C.J. McCollum (GlenOak).
The Sports Time Machine lost a great friend this week as legendary Lincoln and McKinley basketball Coach Ken Newlon passed away. Ken was not only amazingly talented as a coach (with a career spanning 34 years and 527 wins) but was also a true gentleman. We’ll miss you Coach.
We were blessed to have Coach Newlon on our show twice.
The first was a show from 2010 celebrating the greatness that was All City Night and can be listened to here.
A couple weeks later, Ken returned for a visit that focused on the early 80s rivalry between McKinley and Bob DeLap’s Canton South. That episode can be listened to here.
In addition, our very own Billy (Billy J.) Johnson played for Coach Newlon at Lincoln; a show featuring some great reminiscing can be enjoyed here.
Finally, here’s an article profiling Coach Newlon from Larry Hackenberg’s 1986 Sports Time Machine book. The article was penned by the late Gregg Palmer.
Coach Newlon hails from Grafton, West Virginia where he was an outstanding basketball and baseball player. At the age of 16, Ken entered Fairmount (W. Va.) State where he continued his prowess as a basketball player. Turning to more important matters Newlon fought for his country in World War II, flying 27 missions over Germany from Great Britain as a tail gunner on a bomber.
Even in 1960 Ken NewIon was acknowledged as one of Ohio’s great coaches, having produced outstanding basketball teams at three high schools. NewIon had put Stone Creek (Tuscarawas County) on the basketball map by winning the county championshiip (the school’s first ever) in his second season. Interest was so keen that most of the 50 boys in the school tried out for the team. He moved to Strasburg after seven years at Stone Creek, and they still talk about the Ken NewIon teams there. In his last two seasons the Tigers went 47-5, providing the impetus for Newton to get the Canton Lincoln coaching job.
Under Newlon’s direction, Lincoln Lion basketball teams had enjoyed records of 17-4 in 1956-57, 17-3 in 1957-58, and 20-4 with a District championship in 1958-59. Lincoln teams were always recognized by their sound fundamentals, aggressiveness and confidence.
Guests: Henry Armstead & Kevin High
Hosts: Matt Hackenberg & Mark Milano
They get the best seat in the house EVERY game and also get PAID to watch! They’re the referees of course! And we have two of Stark county’s FINEST in studio to give us their unique view of over FIFTY years of Stark county hoops!
Longtime official (and McKinley graduate) Henry Armstead is first up and The Time Machine’s first stop is 1956 as Henry recounts his days as a young fan himself watching the 1956 Canton McKinley team from the sidelines. Among the greats he witnessed – Joe Bandy, Paul Stubbs, Perry Thompson, Larkin Bryant, Dick Alberts, and the big man Herm Jackson. Henry recounts what a treat it was to witness Herm battle Timkens’s Ron Blackledge toe to toe! Other all-star McKinley players discussed include: Roy “Bo Peep” Jackson, Bill Morgan, Nick Weatherspoon, Phil Hubbard, Ruben Vance, and Frank Ridley!
Henry’s fellow ref Kevin High is also in the studio! The time machine materializes in the mid-1970s to witness Kevin playing hoops under legendary Canton Timken coach Fred Harold. Kevin’s 1975-76 team was top 5 ranked in the state; he details a heartbreaking loss at the Field House to the Barberton Magic (who went on to win the state championship that year). Fellow players at Timken included Mike Miday, Scott Vendor, Tony Armsted (Henry’s son!), Frank Maley, Dennis Mumford, and Mike Roberts.

Hear all about Jim’s early days as a high school player and playing basketball and baseball at Ashland College. We discuss his first coaching position at Gnadenhutten and all the stops until arriving at Northwest High School where he was blessed with the opportunity to coach all five of his sons.

Hosts: Larry Hackenberg & Mark Milano
If there’s anything synonymous with the city of Canton, Ohio, it’s the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As we near this summer’s FIFTIETH anniversary of the 1963 hall construction, we are blessed to be joined by two of the caretakers who know it best – Hall of Fame President Steve Perry and Vice President Joe Horrigan.
The first stop on our journey is likely the furthest we’ve traveled to date as we arrive in 1892 to witness the birth of professional football itself when William “Pudge” Huffelfinger is the first player to be be paid to play a game.
We then jump to 1920 when the very first National Football League championship team was…. Akron??? Yep, the team to hold that distinction was the Akron Pros! In addition, their star player was “Fritz” Pollard who was not only one of the first two african americans to play in the league but also went on to become the league’s very first african american head coach!
NFL great and Canton son Dan Dierdorf calls into the show and tells many great stories! The highlight of which has gotta be when, as a young boy, Dan’s father takes him to attend the actual GROUNDBREAKING of the hall’s construction! A wide-eyed Dan never dreams that he himself will one day be inducted into its hallowed halls.
Welcome to the brand new Sports Time Machine website!!!
